Carlos Franz nació en 1959. Ha publicado las novelas Santiago Cero (1988, Premio Latinoamericano de Novela CICLA), El lugar donde estuvo el Paraíso (1996, Punto de Lectura Chile 2007; finalista del Premio Internacional de novela Planeta Argentina, llevada al cine en 2001 por el director español Gerardo Herrero), El desierto (2005, Alfaguara Chile 2016; Premio Internacional de Novela del diario La Nación de Buenos Aires), Almuerzo de vampiros (Alfaguara 2008, Premio Consejo Nacional del Libro y la Lectura de Chile a la mejor novela editada ese año) y Si te vieras con mis ojos (Alfaguara, 2016; premio al mejor libro de 2015 por el Círculo de Críticos de Arte de Chile). También ha publicado el volumen de cuentos La prisionera (2005, Alfaguara 2008; Premio del Consejo Nacional del Libro de Chile), el relato «Alejandra Magna» (2011) y el libro de ensayos La muralla enterrada (2002; Premio Municipal de Ensayo de Santiago de Chile). Algunas de sus novelas han sido traducidas, hasta el momento, a diez lenguas. Ha sido profesor visitante en las universidades de Cambridge y Londres y agregado cultural de Chile en España. Es miembro de la Academia Chilena de la Lengua.
