Grade 5-8. A highly entertaining publication from Spain. Miguel Goitia, 13, tells the story of how his life is turned upside down when both of his parents are killed in a car accident. The boy is then informed by his lawyer and guardian that he has inherited a vast fortune. Since earning a living will never be a problem, Miguel decides he has no need of further education and announces his intention to quit school. He wants to go to Mexico to find his uncle. His guardian agrees to a short visit, but the boy escapes his chaperones and has some wild and interesting encounters lost in the country's cities and in the jungle. Throughout his adventures he is protected from danger by some shape-changing spirits. In the end he meets up with his uncle and agrees to go back to school. This is a lively and suspenseful coming-of-age story. Miguel is a likable character whose distress, confusion, and search for identity will ring true with readers.?Judith Rodriguez, New York Public Library
