Federico GARCÍA LORCA (1898-1936), nacido en Fuente Vaqueros, provincia de Granada y asesinado el 19 de agosto de 1936 por milicias franquistas. Estudió en las universidades de Granada y Madrid, ciudad esta última donde se instalará en la Residencia de Estudiantes. En ella conocerá Buñuel, Dalí, Alberti y otros escritores. Su primera colección poética “Libro de poemas” apareció en1921. Siguió “Romancero gitano” (1928), con el cual alcanzó una extraordinaria popularidad. En 1929 viajó a Nueva-York y de las impresiones de esta visita surgió “Poeta en Nueva-York”. Seguidamente su interés se dirige principalmente hacia el teatro, género al que se inicia con “Mariana Pineda”. En 1932 crea el Teatro Universitario “La Barraca” con la finalidad de hacer llegar las obras clásicas a todo el mundo, incluso a los pueblos más apartados. Su teatro alcanza una altura similar a la de su obra poética y constituye una de las cumbres de la dramática española moderna. El 16 de julio de 1936 viaja de Madrid a Granada, donde es detenido y fusilado un mes después.

About the Author:
Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936)was born in Fuente Vaqueros, a few miles outside Granada in the province of Andalusia, southern Spain. From an early age he was fascinated by Spains mixed heritage, adapting its ancient folk songs, ballads, lullabies, and flamenco music into poems and plays. By the age of thirty, he had published five books of poems, culminating in 1928 with Gypsy Ballads, which brought him far-reaching fame. In 1929/30 he studied in New York City, where he wrote the poems -- among his most socially engaging and compelling -- that were to be published posthumously (and famously) as Poet in New York. Upon returning to Spain, he devoted much of his attention to theater. In 1936, at the outset of the Spanish Civil War, he was shot to death by anti-Republican rebels in Franco's army, and his books were banned and destroyed.
