This is an impressive story which demonstrates the genuine burden of the false in our lives and the real consequences of falsehood. Everything in this book is true although it may seem incredible and perhaps even inconceivable. The author, armed with the classic instruments of the profession of reason, doubt and writing, brings to light the miseries that hide behind what was presented as a great scandal: the discovery, in 1997, of a supposed network of paedophiles in the Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona. It goes on to prove what has been the real scandal: the fact that the accusations that led to innocent citizens going to prison and their severe public humiliation (that separated parents from the children for years) were false, the product of a build up of police, judicial, administrative and journalistic errors. The atrocious chain of incompetence can only be explained by the insane attitude that the army of good adopts on a regular basis, and its application to the fight against paedophilia, the unifying evil of the era: nothing is more dangerous than blind goodness in motion. Facing the devastating truth, the author shows that journalism fulfils its social mandate when a journalist has the courage to have their say and accept all the risks of their responsibility. Raval is a work of enormous quality and merit: it vindicates a dignified journalism, allergic to political corruption, and asks many questions about the functioning of a rightist state in Spanish democracy. It falls like a heavy stone on the still waters of the mythologized Catalán oasis.

From Publishers Weekly:

On June 18, 1997, a headline in Barcelona's La Vanguardia read: "Couple Rented Their 10-Year-Old Son to a Pederast for 30,000 Pesetas a Weekend." The sensational and sometimes fictitious story reported the existence of a ring of pederasts active in a barrio of Barcelona called Raval. In an effort to identify and punish the culprits, the local police and prosecutors eventually interviewed nearly 100 boys, as well as their parents and neighbors. The alleged ringleaders were detained, and parents lost custody of children and, in some instances, suffered public humiliation. At the height of the scandal, the case took on ethnic and political dimensions when Catalan nationalists protested against the negative publicity. Espada, a prize-winning journalist for Barcelona's El Pa¡s, spent three years reviewing the case. He argues that the real scandal was the collusion of police, judges, court-appointed psychologists, and the press in fabricating evidence and ignoring facts. Espada reserves his strongest criticism for the press, which he accuses of having a self-serving relationship with sources. This somber but riveting expos‚, written in the "new journalism" style, will be sought after by Americans and Latin Americans with interest in media studies. Recommended for college-level and specialized collections. [The Catalan edition was published under the title Raval: Del l'amor als nens. Ed.] Ceres Birkhead, Univ. of Utah, Salt Lake City
