Synopsis
Las Cartas marruecas, publicadas en esta edición y cuyo texto se basa por primera vez en un manuscrito de la Biblioteca de la Academia de la Historia, presentan, bajo el género epistolar, una visión del problema de España cuya historia, sociedad e instituciones se ponen en entredicho desde una dimensión moral. En las Noches lúgubres, por otra parte, Cadalso aclimata en España el llamado género sepulcral a imitación de Young. Todo ello en la que no dudaríamos de calificar la mejor prosa del siglo XVIII.

Jose de Cadalso es una de las figuras literarias mas importantes del siglo XVIII. Su historia amorosa, su activo patriotismo, su atrevimiento critico lo convierten en una figura imprescindible del (pre) romanticismo espanol. Las ""Cartas marruecas"" (1774) son una novela social en la que los personajes se enfrentan con la desesperante realidad espanola y proponen soluciones atractivas pero demasiado idealistas. Es notablemente moderna la representacion realista de la sociedad en las ""Cartas marruecas"". En las ""Noches lugubres"" (1771), escritas tres anos antes, tenemos la primera obra romantica europea, el libro con el que se inaugura la literatura romantica del suicidio, y el primer poema en prosa de la literatura espanola. Ambas obras de Cadalso se editan partiendo del cotejo de los mejores manuscritos y ediciones antiguas. --Los editores
