About the Author
Antonio García Gutiérrez nació en Chiclana de la Frontera, en 1813. Abandonó los estudios de medicina por la literatura. Autor teatral, fue amigo de Ventura de la Vega, Larra, Espronceda y otros escritores románticos. Ejerció de diplomático en Inglaterra, Francia, Suiza, Cuba y México. Más tarde, ocupó el cargo de director del Museo Arqueólogico de Madrid. Alcanzó reconocimiento con su primera creación "El trovador" (1836), que inspiró a Verdi su famosa ópera "Il trovatore" (1853). Fue nombrado miembro de la Real Academia Española en 1862. Emilio Arrieta puso música a sus zarzuelas, entre las que destacan "El grumete" (1864) y "La vuelta del corsario" (1865). De su obra lírica hay que recordar su poema "¡Abajo los Borbones!" (1868), que fue muy popular. Murió en Madrid, en1884.
