Reviews

Grade 2-5-A local art competition with the theme "What I Like Best" is the motive behind Daisy's whirlwind tour of four countries in five days in search of artistic inspiration. Accompanied by doggy sidekick Duggie, she visits France, Russia, Tahiti, and the United States, reporting home via picture postcards that showcase her activities and giving snippets of information about a famous artist associated with each locale. Thus, young readers are introduced to the works of Van Gogh, Monet, Chagall, Gauguin, and Pollack before Daisy heads for home. Not surprisingly, she discovers that what she loves best is waiting for her at home, and she creates her best (prize-winning) painting. There isn't much information on famous artists here, but this eye-catching picture book is a visual delight and Daisy's can-do spirit is admirable. The translation is smooth and elementary-aged children will love poring over the illustrations. Elementary teachers looking for books on the creative process or ways to start a unit on famous artists should look here, but the story works equally well for casual readers looking for a book with great pictures. Recommended for both school and public libraries. Pair this one up with Linnea en el Jardin de Monet (Linnea in Monet's Garden, Serres, 2001) for a whizbang unit. Cheryl Scheer, Denver P.L., CO
