With an ad announcing that she "can't cook, but doesn't bite," widow Rose Llewellyn offers her services as a housekeeper in the fall of 1909. Rose's ad immediately catches the attention of Oliver Milliron, a widower with three children and little skill when it comes to chores, and he hires her to try to reinstate some order in his house in Marias Coulee, Montana. Thus begins the unforgettable season Rose and her bookish brother Morris spend in this farming town, where Morris becomes the schoolhouse teacher, and they, the Milliron family, and the town of Marias Coulee will never be the same.

About the Author:
Ivan Doig was a farmer and park ranger in Montana before he became an author, editor, and journalist. His upbringing inspires his writing, and because of it he is considerd one of the best modern-day authors of the American West. He lives in Seattle. Juan Tafur is a novelist and translator who works as a freelance editor in collaboration with several newspapers and publishers in Latin America, Spain, and the United States.
Review:
"An entrancing new chapter in the literature of the West."  —Booklist, starred review, on the English-language edition

"Ivan Doig writes about a vanished way of life on the Western plains with the kind of irony-free nostalgia that seems downright courageous in these ironic times. . . . When a voice as pleasurable as his evokes a lost era, somehow it doesn't seem so lost after all."  —Washington Post, on the English-language edition

"A book to pass on to your favorite readers: a story of lives of active choice, lived actively."  —Publishers Weekly, on the English-language edition

Seller Inventory # 3629980052
