Fueron publicados íntegramente en siete volúmenes, cuya edición corrió a cargo del hermano Patrick Hart, compañero de monasterio y amigo íntimo del autor, y de Jonathan Montaldo, director del Centro Thomas Merton. Ambos son responsables asimismo del presente compendio en dos volúmenes. Los diarios son los últimos escritos de Merton que han visto la luz; constituyen su testamento filosófico y moral, y nos permiten asomarnos al corazón y la mente de un hombre excepcional. En este primer volumen se recogen los pasajes más relevantes del período de formación del autor (de 1939 a 1960).
