Synopsis

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek contains one of the world’s finest collections of Egyptian art, the greater part of which was assembled by the founder of the Glyptotek, the brewer Carl Jacobsen, and his Egyptologist, Valdemar Schmidt, over the period from 1890 to the mid 1920’s. Apart from such important works as the Archaic hippopotamus, the statue-head of King Amen-em-hat III and the statue of Treasury Master Gebu, the first volume of the catalogue includes tomb-reliefs, tomb-statues, sarcophagi and stelae from the period 3000-1550 B.C. i.e. the Archaic Period, the Old and the Middle Kingdoms, as well as the two Intermediate Periods which followed the Old and the Middle Kingdoms respectively. The introduction contains an art-historical overview, an account of the fundamental principles of Egyptian art, as well as a section on its religious background.
