While Europe can be proud of its enlightened culture, oppressed communities in the Third World often form groups based on traditions with strong religious elements to give them a sense of identification and to oppose dominating central powers. About the Author

Jean-Hubert Martin has held many important posts in French museums and has curated dozens of exhibitions. Currently he is general director of the museum kunst palast in Dusseldorf.

Carlo Severi holds the chair of Anthropology of Memory at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris.
