Pubblicato nel 1959 nella collana «Great American artists» dell'editore newyorkese George Braziller, «Jackson Pollock» di Frank O'Hara è la [.] monografia dedicata al grande artista, tragicamente scomparso tre anni prima, e ne segue cronologicamente tutto lo sviluppo, dal rapporto giovanile col muralismo messicano, all'influenza del surrealismo, alle suggestioni mitologiche e totemiche dei dipinti dei primi anni Quaranta, alla pittura più propriamente astratta in cui Pollock trovò se stesso a partire dal '47, fino ai nuovi orizzonti intravisti nelle ultime opere, che sembrerebbero preludere a un nuovo figurativismo. Se da un punto di vista storico-critico il libro deve molto alle analisi di Clement Greenberg e di Harold Rosenberg nel descrivere i princìpi generali dell'Action Painting (l'opposizione tra «parete» e «cavalletto»; l'idea del dipinto come campo di forze; il rifiuto della metafora e del simbolo in favore delle qualità materiche della pittura), per molti altri aspetti è un lavoro straordinario, ricco di pagine di una rara forza evocativa. O'Hara si colloca infatti, con piena consapevolezza, in quella grande tradizione del «poeta come critico d'arte» che va da Baudelaire a Walter Pater ad Apollinaire. Il discorso critico è qui visto non tanto come esegesi quanto come estensione del discorso poetico: nessuna teorizzazione, ben poca analisi tecnica, ma un finissimo esercizio del gusto, belle e talvolta rapsodiche descrizioni, e la capacità quasi infallibile di riconoscere la grandezza.
