Writing a guide to Siena is certainly not an easy task as, at a certain point, it becomes inevitable to make comparisons with famous men of learning and scholars who over the centuries have produced works of great value, from the fantastic medieval chronicles to recently published volumes, compiled with scientific criteria and saturated with information. Our guide has, however, some pretext of originality. Even though, in fact, it is largely dedicated to an exact, if rather synthetic, description of the tourist routes of the city, it also presents, by means of special documents, a deeper and more original version of a whole series of particularly evocative subjects. The reader will be faced with points of view that he may not agree with but that are certainly not haphazard as they are motivated by precise choices and pondered convictions. This method and the interpretations derived from it, is certainly born from experience, study and work, but not only from these. It comes above all from the love of this city and the full awareness that being Sienese represents, as Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli sustained, "a privilege". A privilege that must be merited and maintained. We aim not only to supply the reader with a list of prestigious monuments and wonderful works of art, but also to give him the opportunity of actively participating in the emotions that can be experienced if the city is observed from a "partisan" point of view. This book, therefore, is principally dedicated to Siena. We also wish to dedicate it to Armanda, Monica, Elisa and Guido who have, once again, put up with the tortuous evolution of its creation. Finally, our thoughts turn to Aldo Cairola who was to us both a friend and teacher and - we are certain - would have wished to write this book together with us. Mauro Civai, Enrico Toti
