“Jon and I share a love for street culture where creativity, life, pride, chaos are banded together. This book is a tribute to hip-hop, to street culture, art, soul and to the precious moments of life that we share.” –Maï Lucas
The pulsating monochrome of Drago’s 36 chambers series is met by the iconic graffiti and photography that defines Maï, Jonone and streets of New York. Their eclectic tour of the streets takes the reader through some of New York’s most distinctive neighbourhoods as seen as seen through the lens of celebrated photographer, Maï Lucas. Meanwhile, JonOne’s unique graffiti writing permeates the pages with vibrant red accents.
JonOne’s paintings defy the “rules” of graffiti. With a tremendous sense of movement and color, his compositions combine freestyle, hand-painted aesthetics with a sense of repetition akin to textile patterns. His work has often been compared to that of abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock and French artist Jean Dubuffet. By layering precise strokes and vibrant color, he creates a uniquely balanced yet dynamic visual experience.

About the Author:

Maï Lucas grew up in Paris in the 1980s. When she was still very young she was lucky enough to meet figures like photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino, designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Serge Kruger, DJ at the Bains Douches nightclub. At the age of eighteen she was assistant to Stéphane Sednaoui and Nick Knight, before becoming a fashion photographer in her own right. Fascinated by street culture, she travelled back and forth between New York and Paris, finally settling in New York where for over twenty years now she has documented the streets. Through her street portraits of Afro-American or Latino youngsters who invent their own clothing codes, what she does above all is decode their signals of self-assertion, the emblem of a community that protests its difference, or even the mark of cultural cross-breeding. This focus has taking her between the two cities New York and Paris during the last ten years together with her husband, graffiti artist John Perrello.

Book Description Drago Media. Paperback. Condition: New. Mai Lucas (illustrator). 96 pages. Dimensions: 9.4in. x 6.5in. x 0.5in.This is book number 16 of the cult Drago series 36 Chambers in which the Publisher wants to create the hottest artists book series by international urban artists. Other successful titles include Mike Giant Muerte (bestseller on Amazon) and Beautiful Losers photographer Ivory Serra with The Serra Effect . The idea of this book is to show an example of collaboration by a creative couple: the urban art movement is the only avant garde movement of today so Jonone s actions are an example of today s civil society and shows , by the way, that behind every strong man often there is a strong woman. In this book by old school graffiti writer Jonone will take the challenge of working in just black and white, with one color being inspired by the photos of his wife Ma Lucas, ex flygirl. The challenges of doing something new and good are there for magic to happen by two artists living under the same roof. The code of the street begins with getting respect through fierce and fabulous individual style, without regard for rules or pre-conceptions. Ma Lucas presents the global explosion of street style hip hop culture. For the last 10 years, fashion and documentary photographer, Ma Lucas has been photographing the hip hop style of African American, Hispanic and Asian New York. She photographs the youth culture who inspire and create hip hop style in all of its vitality and evolving forms. She captures the real experience of youth culture who create their own style and games, rising above every economic confine and popular ghetto stereotype of gangs, drugs and guns. For the last 10 years, Ma Lucas has gone out into the streets with her husband, renowned graffiti artist Jonone: photographing the African American and Hispanic youth who live and create hip hop style and culture in all its raw vitality. According to Ma Lucas, they are the strength and inspiration of contemporary high mix culture. Her photos are a homage to them: You shine, for yours and for us too. Let the street speak. Let the people shine. This is a celebration of another New York, Paris and Berlin. A new West Side story . Ma Lucas s Nueva York. From the raw and pomp attitude and fearless poses of the street, to the chintz glamour and gold, the raw sex appeal, tattoos, and booty of the beach, Ma Lucas captures the unabashed, unapologetic style of hip hop youth culture.
