In English and Italian. The contributions of this volume were presented in Venice, during the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (CALA) Design Workshop: "Projects for the area of S. Francesco della Vigna" (April 1-May 11, 2002), sponsored by VESTA. With the partnership of the Municipality of Venice. CALA Design Workshop undertakes the project of Developing the Gasometer Site as design research for desirable scenarios through following the 1996 masterplan and examining the City's intention to transform this neighborhood area. CALA design studio is made up of masters' degree candidates from the departments of architecture and landscape architecture at the University of Minnesota. The workshop structure consists of team investigation, expert consultants, lectures and round-table sessions. The work explores how spaces into the quotidian scale of Venetian urban fabric. The process of design research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches in two major phases: site investigation and design proposals. With the City's strategic plan, assessing the value of industrial heritage, and focusing on the transformation of urban fabric, our hope is that any strategic intervention in the present conditions may celebrate a lively quotidian life in the neighborhood. The Gasometer Site is an acknowledgement of industrial heritage that becomes transformed to a new gateway for networking waterways and passages in the northern part of the Venice Lagoon. The effort of CALA Design Workshop continues its commitment to promoting public awareness of sustainable projects through design research.
