A detailed history of art collecting in the US, particularly the pursuit of "Old Master" paintings by affluent Americans from the period immediately following the Civil War to the beginning of the 20th century (and the advent of the income tax, which made such conspicuous consumption as private art galleries too expensive for any but the wealthiest collectors). Individuals and the fledgling museums that sprang up around the country focused on Italian Primitive, Italian Renaissance, Italian Baroque and 18th Century French Painting, with a healthy leavening of the 15th & 16th Century Dutch and Flemish stars. This catalog contains important examples of these schools, with full-page, full-color reproductions of each work and a lengthy essay by an expert the particular artist or the school he represents.
