Synopsis

On account of Conrad’s tragic and fascinating life before he became a writer, critics have usually offered a historical account of his early Polish years. Less attention has been paid to the cultural and literary background of that period and its subsequent influence. In fact, initially that influence was largely ignored. My aim has been not only to rectify that deficiency but to broaden the scope of the issue. In addition to dealing with his Polish background, the book also relates Conrad’s writing to other European literary traditions, notably French and Russian. Exploring the extraordinary geographical and historical range of Conrad’s fictional world, the book examines the rhetorical and narrative strategies employed in its vividly dramatic as well as psychologically insightful depictions.

About the Author

Andrzej/Andrew Busza is a poet, critic, and translator. He was born in 1938 in Kraków, spent the war years in the Middle East, and was educated in England. He studied at University College, London, where he earned his B.A. Hons and M.A. From 1965 to 2004 he was Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He is currently Emeritus. In 1977-8 he served as Visiting Professor at the University of Nice. He is the recipient of three literary awards; his poetry has been the subject of a book in Polish; and, in 2016, a conference devoted to his work was held at the University of Rzeszów.

Allan H. Simmons is Emeritus Professor of English Literature at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London. His research interests are directed towards the works of Joseph Conrad. He is the General Editor of The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Joseph Conrad for which he has edited a number of scholarly editions including An Outcast of the Islands, The Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’ and A Set of Six. He is also one of the General Editors of The Conradian, the journal of the Joseph Conrad Society.

John G. Peters, a University Distinguished Research Professor at the University of North Texas, is General Editor of Conradiana. He is author of Conrad and Impressionism, The Cambridge Introduction to Joseph Conrad, and Joseph Conrad’s Critical Reception.
