From the Inside Flap

Every year New York art and design schools such as Pratt, Parsons, SVA, the Cooper Union, NYU, FIT, and schools surrounding New York, such as Penn State, Yale, RISD, and The University of the Arts in Philadelphia produce 2,700 graphic designers, art directors, illustrators and commercial photographers.

An army of 13,000 full-time, 8,000 part-time, 30,000 freelance and self-employed designers from all 50 American states and nearly every country worldwide work for 2,000 New York design agencies, 1,200 publishing and media companies, 5,000 in- house design departments, and 500 creative departments in advertising.

More than 30 New York recruitment agencies are specializing in design job searches. Over 20 professional design organizations in New York, such as AIGA, AGI, ADC, APD and TDC maintain memberships of 6,000, with hundreds of awards, shows and annual publications.

Over a dozen trade publications based in New York, including Graphis, Print, ID, Metropolis and Graphic Design USA, cover all aspects of design and visual culture from around the globe. Add to that a countless number of weblogs, email-based and web-based newsletters reaching thousands of viewers daily. Businesses are coming to understand the power and possibilities of design. More than ever, designers are being called upon to solve various strategic and tactical business problems, and in many cases design has become an integral component of everyday business.

20,000 retail outlets, 3,000 fashion and cosmetic brands, 5,000 financial institutions, 20,000 Business to Business companies, 1,000 publishing companies, 1,000 non-profit organizations, 200 museums, 2,000 entertainment enterprises, 1,000 government agencies, and 400 educational institutions comprise the client landscape for a graphic designer.

As the world’s cultural and business center, New York offers unlimited opportunities for designers to participate, thrive, influence and challenge every aspect of human life. New York is an American city, but it’s also a world city, and it reflects, magnifies and influences all that’s happening with the world -- politically, economically and culturally in all the details.

Design-wise, it’s always been a place of innovation, where New York’s own design pioneers, such as French-born Raymond Loewy, Russian-born Alexey Brodovich, Brooklyn-born Paul Rand and Budapest-born Tibor Kalman, have become the symbols of the profession itself. This legacy continues attracting people with dreams, ambition and talent from all over the world.

The continuously growing New York design community is geographically expanding far beyond Manhattan Island. New communities are emerging in all five boroughs of New York City as well as other short-distant centers, like White Plains, Jersey City, and New Haven -- to name a few.

Broadening interests and influences are leading to fragmentation. This recent global trend is increasingly evident in New York. Formal and informal communities are concentrating around disciplines such as branding, interactive design and web, advertising, packaging, type design, editorial design and publishing, book jacket design, motion graphics and broadcast design, design of corporate literature and exhibits, point-of-purchase displays, environmental graphics and information design.

Nevertheless, there are always individuals whose work and ideas don’t fit established classifications, the catalysts and inventors who take the initiative and always find their own way -- whether there’s a creative brief or not, for a client or without a client. They create stimulating work and always have something to say.

In order to offer a little glimpse of the New York design experience and to introduce some of the most original design thinkers and practitioners New York has to offer today we had to select, edit and cut down our materials to 304 pages, 63,298 words and 1,084 images from 23 studios and individuals. We hope you’ll find this experience informative and stimulating.
