Dust jacket notes: "This book traces the eventful and often tragic path that Jews of Spanish-Portuguese descent (so-called Sephardi Jews) have taken throughout many ages. Author Piet Huisman has based his book on a wide variety of sources. Beginning at the ancient history of Israel, he leads the reader through the successive ages that the Sephardi Jews lived in Spain and Portugal after having been evicted from the Holy Land. From there on, the story takes the reader to the Low Countries where the Jews for the first time found nearly unrestricted religious freedom. Huisman then follows the path to South America and the Caribbean and, finally, to North America. 'Sephardim' is unique insofar as it reconstructs a history that is rarely retold in a popular fashion. A story within the main story is Huisman's discussion of two Sephardi cemeteries of both historical and sentimental importance: the one at Ouderkerk aan de Amstel in the Netherlands and its counterpart on the Caribbean island of Curacao. With this book Piet Huisman has made a valuable and welcome addition to the knowledge of the history of a people that is too important to forget."
