Paperback. Condition: Fine. Reprint. Signed by Nobel Prize-winning author Tomas Transtromer on first page (with initials). Laid in loose is an extraordinary 2-page typed letter signed from Transtromer's translator Michael McGriff, to renowned Irish poet Eavan Boland of Stanford University. In this remarkable letter, McGriff tells of a journey to Sweden to visit Transtromer (during which this book was signed as explained) and discuss McGriff translating Transtromer's Collected Poems into English. In the letter, McGriff recounts how Transtromer had fallen and suffered severe injuries the day before his arrival, but insisted on seeing McGriff for a lengthy visit in the hospital. Included is discussion of issues with Transtromer's longtime English translator Robin Fulton, of the challenges of communicating with him, his piano playing, etc. McGriff closes with thanks to Boland for Stanford's support of his work (through a Stegner fellowship, etc.), then presenting the work and describing Transtromer's signing of it. Although McGriff did not ultimately translate Transtromer's Collected Poems, he was later to issue Transtgromer's 'The Sorrow Gondola', co-translated with Mikaela Grassl, in 2010 (Green Integer). The date of the visit, book signing, and letter must fall sometime after 2010, but well before 2010. Seller Inventory # 638147
