Reviews

PreSchool-K-- Originally published in Sweden in 1947, this import centers on five-year-old Larry, who always finds just one more thing to do instead of going to bed. During a visit to an elderly neighbor's apartment, he puts on her magic glasses and is able to see far away into other animals' homes and observe their activities. Through his glimpses into the lives of Teddy Bear, the Rabbit kids, Benny and the baby birds, Sammy Squirrel, and Casper Rat, Larry understands that "children everywhere have to sleep at night," comes home, and goes directly to bed. While Wikland's cheerfully cluttered drawings provide abundant detail to interest children, Lindgren's story feels jarringly out-of-place and didactic in comparison to picture books published in the last decade. Today's children need more persuasive evidence than this to get them into bed. --Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, Conn.
