Kindergarten-Grade 3-- The joys and trials of preschool romance are brought to life in this humorous tale told in rhyme. Pete and Cilla get married every day at school until bully Billie L. wins Cilla's heart. Poor Pete suffers the classic signs of a broken heart--depression, anger, despair--then resorts to "magic" to get his girl back. The title question is subtly answered--the magic is love, a gift which Pete carries into adulthood. The long lines will challenge new readers, and both the rhythm and rhyme occasionally falter (hour/dinosaur, now/kangaroo). Nonetheless, the Lagercrantz' tale will delight readers and listeners alike. Equally enchanting are Eriksson's signature line-and-wash illustrations. Muted colors and scrawling lines capture the frenetic atmosphere of a zany classroom and flesh out each character, giving personality to even minor players, but the illustrator's talent is never more evident than in the scenes of Pete's reactions to rejection. Longer than the usual story hour fare, this title will find an audience with intimate groups and young readers just venturing forth from the "I Can Read" shelves. --Jeanne Marie Clancy, Upper Merion Township Library, King of Prussia, PA
