Since it's so hot, Will and his mother decide to bike to the beach with a picnic lunch. But their perfect day is almost spoiled when it starts to rain-until Will decides to take a dip, anyway. That's when he discovers something exciting!

Olof Landström has illustrated numerous books for children, including Benny's Had Enough! He and his wife, Lena Landström, are the creators of the Boo and Baa books. They live in Sweden.
Ages 3^-5. Young Will and his mother pack a lunch, and they bicycle down to the beach. Everything looks fine until Mama says, "Let's practice swimming today." Suddenly the beach seems crowded, rain starts to fall, and Will is cold. When he tests the water, though, Will finds it warm and welcoming. Soon he's taking tentative swimming strokes and feeling good about his progress. The story line may be slight, but this picture book will please many preschoolers with its understated depiction of familiar emotions. The ink drawings, brightened with delicate watercolor washes, deftly express nuances of action and feeling. A pleasant excursion for children who enjoyed Will's New Cap (1992), Will Gets a Haircut (1993), and Will Goes to the Post Office (1994). Carolyn Phelan
