The Modern Defence is not a solid opening. In fact, on some level maybe it's not an opening at all. It's the Wild West of chess opening theory, a safe haven for true chess lovers who are just spoiling for a fight. The structures that can result are almost unlimited in their variety and the potential for dynamic piece play is also huge. You need real passion to play it, and also the ability to work hard at the board. But it's also played at the very top: even the names Carlsen and Kramnik occur sometimes in these pages! This book is primarily intended for players who want to play the position after 1.e4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 for Black. However, and inevitably for the computer age, there is also a strong focus on chess truth. That means there are also some recommendations for White that are not yet well-known in mainstream opening theory, and that the book has something to offer everyone.

About the Author
GM Daniel Fernandez (born 1995) is an English grandmaster with a slightly unusual approach to chess: at once mischievous and hardworking, and equally comfortable in tactical positions or dry endgames. His style fits the Modern perfectly and he has played it with success for almost a decade. He is a past holder of the British under-18 and under-21 titles, and the winner (or joint winner) of many open tournaments, such as Paracin 2017, Pula 2018, Ghent 2019 and the New Zealand Open 2020. Daniel also writes and commentates frequently, and is a columnist of the 1.e4 section on ChessPublishing.com. This is his second book for Thinkers Publishing, the Modernized Caro-Kann was his first and world wide acclaimed as one of the best.

"The Modernized Modern Defense" ist ein Repertoirebuch, das sich in erster Linie für den Einsatz im herkömmlichen Turnierschach eignet. Es vermittelt dem Leser die Chance, Spielweisen der Modernen Verteidigung und der Pirc-Verteidigung so zu verinnerlichen, dass er seine Partie mit selbst am Brett ermittelten klugen Zügen führen kann. Dieser Aspekt überwiegt den weiteren Vorteil, dass das Werk ein konkret gestaltetes Repertoire anbietet, weil der Leser selbst beim Verlassen konkreter Pfade nicht aus dem Spiel kommen wird.
Das Repertoire ist aus der Warte von Schwarz geschrieben, kann aber auch für die Spielführung mit Weiß genutzt werden, soweit die Partie in den Empfehlungen für Schwarz bleibt. Eine Ausnahme bildet ein Kapitel, das sich gerade Weiß zunutze machen kann, weil er auf dessen Basis mit einem reduzierten Aufwand zu einer guten Vorbereitung gegen die Bucheröffnungen kommen kann.
