It is interesting to note that Mr. S.A. Kularathne has reacted to a timely need by way of writing a user's guide to Nihal de Silva's The Road From Elephant Pass, a novel prescribed for GCE (A/L) English. As I observed, this is not a guide where the author showers the users with readymade packages inhibiting their creative thinking but a collection of interesting learning events which demands active learner involvement. One of the prime duties of a teacher is to ensure learner autonomy in the learning-teaching process. Task based learning is instrumental in doing so. Mr. Kularathne, the teacher with much exposure to English Language Teaching, seems to be governed by this thought when writing the user's guide. Studying literature prescribed for Advanced Level demands higher order of reading and writing skills, a state that learners cannot gain only by following lectures or reading readymade materials. They should be trained to respond to a wide range of genres analytically. Self access learning materials of this nature are enriching in this regard. While appreciating his timely effort I wish the author success in his future endeavours. K.L.M. Premachandra, Retired Deputy Director of Education, English & Foreign Language Branch. Ministry of Education
