9789609806121: The Notebook of Vincent

Vincent... Vincent van Gogh!... What do we really know about this great painter? Most of the people mainly know three things: that he was mad, he cut his ear and he commited a suicide. The only thing in which we agree is that Vincent truly cut his ear!... Vincent van Gogh wasn t mad at all, as it is believed by his official experts. Anyway, the story of his madness suits them in any case... Maybe because it hides a terrible secret! As for the suicide matter... why really Vincent didn t warn about his intention and why did he shoot himself to the chest, and we speak about a non mortal wound, which left him alive, although helpless (!) for almost... 48 hours after his attempt? Can we then speak here about a suicide or... The answers to these questions are given by the great artist himself through his... personal Notebook! his Notebook, which came in the Nazis hands during the Second World War and its traces were lost after 1945 because of a strange twist of Fate, was recently found in a private collection. he discovery of this unique art diary (a diary not written in words but in... drawings) diary , lead to revelation of the Vincent van Gogh s secret language! What fascinates me much, much more than it does all the others in my trade -is the portrait, the modern portrait. I am accepting it with colour, and I am certainly not alone in attempting it this way. I should like -you see, I m far from saying that I can, but I m going to try anyway- I should like to do portraits which will appear as revelations to people in a hundred year s time. In other words, I am not trying to achieve this by photographic likeness but by rendering our impassioned expressions, by using our modern knowledge and appreciation of colour as a means of rendering and exalting character. Vincent van Gogh

Review:

A Greek family has claimed ownership of a notebook they believe to contain early sketches by the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh missing since the First World War. Among the host of images contained within its pages are detailed drawings of figures in the masterpieces The Potato Eaters (1885) and Portrait of Pere Tanguy (1887). The notebook has been kept in an Athens bank vault since the Greek resistance seized it, along with a framed photograph of Van Gogh, during a raid on a Nazi supply train as the Germans pulled out of the country at the end of the war. Doretta Peppa, the current owner and daughter of one of the resistance fighters, conceded it was likely the book was plundered by the Nazis but added that no claim of original ownership had surfaced. The notebook - which has yet to be authenticated - apparently dates from the year Van Gogh was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Art in Brussels in 1880, a period that represented the post-impressionist master's only formal training. Mrs Peppa, a writer, is now recognised under Greek law as the owner of the book, which she believes could fetch as much as £2.5 million at auction. "It's an inheritance from my father and no one asked for it," she said. "It's mine." Patricia Bosboom, a spokesman for the Vincent Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, said its experts had been made aware of the sketchbook but no verdict on its authenticity had been made available. She said: "We get quite a few requests for authentication from people who believe they have something by Vincent Van Gogh." --Telegraph.co.uk

ATHENS, Greece - A sketchbook believed to have been Vincent van Gogh's containing portraits similar to those in his most famous works has been found in Greece, its owner said on Wednesday. Taken by a Greek resistance fighter from a Nazi train, the sketchbook was discovered in storage boxes by his daughter, who is seeking to establish its authenticity with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. One art expert commissioned by Greek writer Doreta Peppa concluded the sketches were by the 19th century Dutch post-Impressionist artist. Foreign experts would soon examine the work to rule on its authenticity, she said. --msnbc.msn.com
