Book Description Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong, 2001. Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. First Edition. The discovery of a storage pit of ancient Buddhist stone sculpture in the mid 1990's near the site of the ruins of the Longxing Temple, in rural Shandong Province, China, turned out to be one of the most important archaeological finds in the past several decades. Once excavation was complete, several hundred sculptures were recovered, spanning the Northern Wei to Northern Song Dynasties (6th to 11th centuries). While many were fragmental, all of the recovered figures were executed with an exceptionally high level of skill; their long sojourn underground had preserved not only the fine details of their carving but also in many cases, the brilliant polychrome paints and gilding that had originally been applied to their surfaces. More importantly still, the discovery of such a large corpus of work, spanning so long a period, from a single site, enabled art historians for the first time to reconstruct the actual evolution of styles and iconography of this important period, spanning as it does the absorption of influence of the Buddhist art of Gupta India into native Chinese traditions. Selections from the finds have since toured the world, and have been exhibited at many major museums in the West, (including the Smithsonian, the Royal Academy in London, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg to name just a few) -- each venue has catalogued their exhibition. However the present catalogue, representing the largest exhibition of these objects yet, in the Hong Kong Museum of Art, is by far the most extensive publication covering the Qingzhou horde. An essentail reference for the study of east Asian Buddhist art. Bilingual English/Chinese throughout. Four scholarly essays, 100 objects fully described and illustrated in colour, often with multiple views. Hardcover with padded faux-leather cover, 344 pages, size 8 3/8" x 11 1/2". Illustrated with 181 colour plates, 11 line drawings. Like New pre-owned condition. No prior owner handwriting or text marking. No smoke or other odor. [6612am-a7400] Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
