This new and exciting translation of Homers epic war poem, The Iliad, is told with excitement and character by Anton Lesser. The poem concentrates on the key 50 days during the ten-year war, when there is strife not only between the Greeks and the defending Trojans, but also within the Greek forces themselves. The mighty warrior Achilles, angry with Agamemnon, withdraws from the battle and only returns to face Hector when his close companion Patroclus is killed. This abridged version offers the key moments.

This abridgment of this British classic lacks the authors distinct style, as well as a coherent story line. The dashing story of time-travel has been cut apart in an unfortunate manner. Large chunks of dialogue and description have been removed so that characters appear and disappear without explanation. Part of the time-travel ritual is not included, making the last chapters of the book confusing. While Anna Bentincks narration is competent, her portrayal of the Psammead, the magical sand fairy from the Middle East, does not suit his mystical personality. Not even the remains of Nesbits glorious story can save this endeavor. C.A. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
