Originally published in 1978 in Hungary by Academy Publishing House and in Russia under a misleading title (to avoid political repression), the volume has been out of print since 1981. These selected reprints bring together a portion of the fascinating shamanistic studies conducted by Russian, Swedish, Finnish, and Hungarian scholars. The essays introduce shaministic philosophy and practice among various Siberian peoples, including costume and drumming, funeral rites, and the practice of metaphoric transvestism. The articles often contain first hand accounts from practicing shamans and shamanesses. The translation by S▀ndor Simon is, in the editor's words, "literal." Distributed by ISBS.
