This collection of studies was published first in German, in 1963. It was necessary to reprint the book because the English version, published in 1968, was completely sold out. As compared to the first edition this one contains only the studies dealing with shamanism. The volume includes a lot of interesting essays with plenty of new information, and introduces a new methodological point of view. The authors write about old shaman drums and the shamanic elements of Hungarian folk tradition, in three essays about the Samoyed shamans, in one about the shaman drums of the Altai Turks, and finally in two about the shamanic beliefs and songs of the Evenki (Tungus) ethnic group. These studies reveal the rich world of Eurasian shamanism to historians of religion, folklorists, ethnographers, anthropologists, linguists and to the interested reader.
