The section on material culture gives prominence to the forms of setlement, building construction, houschold furnishings and farm buildings, their shape, structure, regional differences and historical development. Animal husbandry and agriculture are dealt with as well as hunting, fishing and beekeeping. A separate chapter is devoted to alimentation and the art of the peasant kitchen. The separate chapters discuss folk customs and the related arts and crafts, as well as certain branches of oramental folk art, such as carving, spinning and weaving, pottery and furniture making. The part of the book devoted to folklore begins with folk dance and folk music and takes the reader into the exceptionally rich province of Hungarian folk poetry and prose. Folk customs related to the calendar year and to the great occasions of human life such as baptism, wedding and burial, and the world of Hungarian folk belief are also discussed. Finally the authors draw a picture of the way certain elements of folk culture, such as folk music and customs, still operate in contemporary Hungarian culture. Using current as well as earlier sources, the authors place their subject into historical perspective, At the same time, they also draw attention to the interrelationships between the various cultural regions of Hungary and the neighbouring peoples.
