My first vist to Transylvania was 13 years ago and began a passion in me that continues today. Despite the slow march of Western commercialism, I feel honored to have had so many unique opportunities to experience first hand the vibrant traditional music and dance of these Transylvanian villages.
Transylvania, or Erdély in Hungarian, is a historical region in the southeast part of the Carpathian Basin. It is home to Europe's largest ethnic minority, the Hungarians of Romania. The signing of the Treaty of Trianon at the end of WWI pushed Hungary's borders about 500 kilometers to the west, giving much of her land to Romania. These Hungarians still live here, where cultures have clashed and coexisted for centuries.
