A celebration of traditional Hungarian folk culture in Transylvania. Over 140 color photographs reveal the powerful vestiges of an ancient culture that has changed little over time. The images focus on traditional music and dance — integral parts of village existence — and the culture that guards and preserves them. Each picture is transformed by the photographer’s anecdotes from over a decade in the region.

It is my hope that by publishing this book of photographs I will have contributed something valuable, however small, to the ongoing process of preserving and celebrating the traditional Hungarian folk culture of Transylvania.
My first vist to Transylvania was 13 years ago and began a passion in me that continues today. Despite the slow march of Western commercialism, I feel honored to have had so many unique opportunities to experience first hand the vibrant traditional music and dance of these Transylvanian villages. From the Inside Flap:
Welcome to Transylvania, a barely known pocket of Europe's earth lying in Romania which was part of the Hungarian Kingdom for most of it's thousand year history.
Transylvania, or Erdély in Hungarian, is a historical region in the southeast part of the Carpathian Basin. It is home to Europe's largest ethnic minority, the Hungarians of Romania. The signing of the Treaty of Trianon at the end of WWI pushed Hungary's borders about 500 kilometers to the west, giving much of her land to Romania. These Hungarians still live here, where cultures have clashed and coexisted for centuries.
