Synopsis
In preparing the present edition of the Divan of Hafez (also spelled Hafiz, 1325-1389), we thought we would add to the usefulness of the book if we included a small section of English translations. After all, Iranian families are now scattered all over the world, and not everyone in the family is able to read classical Persian. Gertrude Bell's translations were made when she was in her late twenties, after graduating in history from Oxford and studying Persian with private tutors. She later became a diplomat. Her translations were first published in 1897. This facsimile illuminated manuscript features beautiful Persian miniatures by world-famous painter Mahmoud Farshchian and calligraphy by Abbas Akhaveyn.

Sewn binding in golden silk boards with black/white head bands. Title block and design stamped in gilt on front cover. Light wear to slipcase. There is a 3" horizontal scratch in the front of the jacket above the title, otherwise minor wear to jacket. Binding is square and tight. Pages are clean and bright and unmarked.
