This book aims at explaining the workings of the major factors which have influenced contemporary Israeli music, such as the music of the Orient, Biblical cantillation and liturgical melodies of various Jewish communities, the Hebrew language, Western music and the Jewish folk tunes from different parts of the world. Original material for this investigation was obtained through personal interviews with composers, musical educators and musicologists in Israel, as well as the examination of published and unpublished scores, and analysis of recordings, broadcasts and live performances.
