9789652292698: The Ivory Pomegranate: A Novel

In this tantalizing and original novel, Audrey Lindenthal, archaeologist and Jew, beholds a vision of an ivory pomegranate – a rare treasure unearthed from an ancient archaeological site in Israel. Ambivalent about her religion, and despondent about her estranged son, she embarks on a spiritual journey in search of herself.

Along the way, she explores her fiery relationship with her colleague Yitz – once a cult member but now a devout Jew determined to bring Audrey back to Judaism. Yitz’s rabbi and mentor, Devora, possesses a burning secret of her own. Audrey’s son Benjamin is eager to reconnect with a mother who is struggling to connect with herself. And Audrey’s lover, the free-spirited Jose Antonio, is young, passionate – and unfaithful.

Set in the dusty plains of Arizona, a tumultuous web of relationships is unearthed to recount a powerful story that resonates today, at a time when religious belief seems arbitrary and the bonds connecting families more precarious. A daring excavation of contemporary American Jewish life, The Ivory Pomegranate is melodically written and masterfully elaborated, and is, itself, a rare and delicate treasure.
