In 1839 he undertook a journey across the Sinai Peninsula to Petra, Jerusalem and Palestine, along the Lebanese coast and to the mysterious city of Baalbek. The lithographs based on the sketches Roberts executed during his remarkable exploration of the Holy Land won him fame that still endures today. This oversized, full-color volume presents, for the first time, Roberts' original plates, arranged in chronological order, with commentary and extracts from his journals. Each illustration is paired with a photograph that depicts the same composition and setting, nearly 150 years later, offering an imaginative and evocative form of time travel, a search of new - yet ancient - discoveries in one of the world's most historic and most fascinating regions. -- David Roberts was born in 1796 at Stockbridge, near Edinburgh, to an extremely humble family. He spent his childhood in total but dignified poverty, which fortunately did not prevent him from showing early but remarkable artistic skills. Gifted with great determination and equal talent, Roberts succeeded in overcoming his modest beginnings and quickly became one of the most acclaimed artists of the period. An excellent landscape artist, he traveled repeatedly throughout Europe, practicing his métier. In 1838, he set out for Egypt, and during the first months of the following year, he journeyed through the Sinai Peninsula, Petra, Jerusalem, Palestine, the coast of Lebanon, and Baalbek. Between 1842 and 1849, the lithographs were published in London by Francis Graham Moon, to great public acclaim. Now, a century and a half later, Roberts' artistic legacy is available in all its splendor, confirming that the Holy Land sparked and unforgettable feat of technical and artistic virtuosity that earned Roberts a major place in the firmament of English art of the 19th century. -- Contents: Introduction; Life of David Roberts; From Suez to Jerusalem; Jerusalem and the Pilgrimage to the River Jordan; From Jerusalem to Baalbec.
