About the Author

Rodolfo Usigli (1905-79) is considered by many to be Mexico's foremost twentieth-century dramatist. The son of recently arrived European ?migr?s, he lived through the Mexican Revolution and shared the populist and reformist ideals that inspired artists and intellectuals of the postrevolutionary period. Usigli, who was also a poet, novelist, and essayist of distinction, created in his plays a probing and far-reaching interpretive vision of Mexican history, institutions, and cultural values. His widely anthologized El gesticulador (The Impostor) and his Corona de sombra (Crown of Shadows) are regarded as classics in both Mexican and Latin American drama. Recognized with the National Prize for Literature in 1972, he was pronounced by Octavio Paz ?the best [Mexican] playwright in this century.?
