Major Aftab Ahmed was born in village Kharian District Gujrat. He graduated from Isalmia College Lahore. In December 1968 he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in 25th Battalion of the Baluch Regiment. Enjoyed command and staff experience as a young and a middle ranking field officer and participated in the unfortunate civil war in East Pakistan leading to 1971 Indo-Pak war.
In January 1984, along with many others, he was arrested by Gen Zia's military regime for resistance against martial law. Declared the principal accused and tried in-camera by a special military court at Attock Fort for waging war against Pakistan he was sentenced to a rigorous term for life. As a prisoner he carried on with a fearless struggle against abject conditions prevalent in Pakistani jails with great personal and family discomfort but considerable success. General Zia's death in an air crash led to restoration of civil order as a result of which in December 1988, along with other political prisoners, he was released from jail. In Jan 1994 for reasons of political dissent he was arrested by Benazir Bhutto's democratic government and kept behind bars for another three years. It was only after her fall in Nov, 1996 that he could see the light of the day.
He has a number of books, published or in the pipe line, to his credit. Material entails his life in war and peace and is a thrilling story of his years on battle front and in barracks, before military and civil courts and in torture cells and jails: a heroic struggle for restoration of constitution, human rights, honour and dignity.
