Konya Cappadocia Carpets: From the 17th to 19th Centuries

9789757622673: Konya Cappadocia Carpets: From the 17th to 19th Centuries

Central Anatolia has been an important carpet-weaving center for a very long time. The presence of the oldest-known Anatolian Turkish carpets in mosques in Konya and Beysehir and the historically documented increase in the carpet trade in the same region paralleling the process of the Turkification of Anatolia both suggest that an investigation of the carpets of Central Anatolia should yield interesting results.

Anatolian carpets may be divided into three broad categories- Western Central and Eastern- on the basis of their distinguishing regional features. The examples presented in this catalog are members of a collection of pieces that share common elements of design, pattern, color, and texture and that were woven, most probably between 17th and 19th centuries, in the region bounded by Konya, Karaman, and Nevsehir in Central Anatolia.

Each carpet in this catalog is a unique and original work of art and each has been treated with modern concepts of conservation at textile museums. Most items in this group have never before been published. These carpets form the most comprehensive group specific to this type and region, and the collection is unitary and coherent.
