When Istanbul becomes too small, it just expands by filling up its bodies of water. From a city where the fortress walls and waterfront houses rose just above the water, Istanbul turned into a city where wide boulevards and broad parks run in between the sea and the rows of buildings due to the recent landfill areas. This book is composed of a series of scenarios, narrated by fictional characters such as the developer, the nostalgic, the archeologist, the entertainer, the religious, the ecologist, the utopian, the cynic, the frequent flyer, the driver and the sailor, whose dramatized utopias culminate in tragic ends. Each scenario is narrated three times in three languages translated into each other: The characters who tell their own stories use English, the outside narrator speaks in Turkish, and the third, visual language, narrates the stories through the medium of collage that import images from different parts of the world. The book explores the potential of fiction in architectural and urban criticism, and suggests the fine and fragile boundary between a plausible incident that has almost happened and an apocalyptic catastrophe, a utopia and a dystopia.
