From the Author:

Because These Are Mostly Harmless (from The Preface)

The stories in this book are written for entertainment--any other ramification is fortuitous. If you can derive an evening's pleasure from any of these stories, then my primary purpose for writing these would have been achieved. Of course, this does not preclude the existence of hidden meanings, symbolisms and staggered interpretation. But riddles should be diversions: tidbits provided for the metaphysically inclined and the literature student, the esotericism of Strauss notwithstanding. In any case, interpretations are rarely facts, and when it comes to hidden meanings, Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia.

Of course, the defocus on symbols does not exclude my intention to create scenarios that shift away from the first-world's view of African literature--that kaleidoscope of yearning Africans, buffeted by the (imagined) circumstances of the gory jungle, trampled under the dust of "the single story", seeking nondescript redemption from the West--and showcase, instead, the strong individual humans, not just "Africans", changing their fortunes and rising against the (imagined) circumstances of the gory jungle, but without any help from the West. In simpler words: the African character in a story is equally able to redefine his destiny without necessarily having an American visa in his pocket.

But look for the story first, the harmless, unassuming story. The important goal in any piece of fiction is the ability to tell a story. Art should not be confused with social science, and neither should a story be mistaken for a lecture.

From the Back Cover:

"In The Wonderful Life of Senator Boniface, Ayo Sogunro deploys delightful poetry and impish prose to analyze Nigeria, a country that the great Wole Soyinka calls "the open sore of the continent." Sogunro the social activist, Sogunro the poet and Sogunro the essayist meet to produce a book that is funny, insightful and thought-provoking.  It is comforting to know that there are still some in our midst like Sogunro with a big heart, a conscience and the literary fire-power to force us to ask the question: Why are things the way they are?"

- - Ikhide R. Ikheloa
 Social and literary critic
