The geopolitical landscape of Southeast Asia has been dramatically re-shaped with the emergence of East Timor as the world's newest nation. Like a phoenix, East Timor has risen triumphantly from the ashes of Indonesian invasion and occupation. But it has paid a heavy price for its independence. Hundreds of thousands perished in the bloody struggle for power waged between the competing Timorese political factions following the collapse of Portuguese colonial rule and the David-and-Goliath struggle with Indonesia that followed. While this journey to independence ended with East Timor's referendum in August 1999, it began with Portugal's abandonment a quarter of a century earlier. TIMOR: A Nation Reborn revisits that crucial period in history and the pursuit of power by individuals and factions competing for local dominance, as well as regional giants conspiring to fulfill their own political agendas. TIMOR is a story of lies, deceit, intrigue, naiveté and suffering. It is a human story with tragic consequences compellingly documented first-hand by author Bill Nicol.

Bill Nicol is an independent journalist, author, cartoonist, consultant, facilitator, coach and educator. After completing his journalistic cadetship with the Canberra Times, he left Australia to freelance in Southeast Asia. Engrossed with the politics of decolonisation in East Timor, he spent four years researching and writing this book, first published in 1978 under the title Timor: The Stillborn Nation. He completed the book while working as a news reporter with CTC-TV in Canberra and was then recruited to the new ABC TV current affairs program Nationwide before moving to Radio Australia briefly as political correspondent.
Bill then returned to independent journalism to research and write his second investigative book, McBride: Behind the Myth, exposing the scientific misdeeds of fallen thalidomide hero William McBride. Supporting himself as a freelance journalist at this time, client assignments soon translated him from the world of journalism to that of management consulting where he discovered a keen interest in and aptitude for the politics and practices of organisational management. Preoccupied with these, Bill has spent the past two decades helping public and private organisations improve their performance through enhanced business strategies, governance systems and management skills. His interest in this area led him to write and illustrate his third book, Negotiating A to Z. Bill is a member and past president of the ACT Chapter of the Australian Institute of Management Consultants. His email address is firstname.lastname@example.org.Review:
