Synopsis

Reviews

Kindergarten-Grade 2-In this marvelous collection of five short tales for early readers, Lobel's humor and whimsy are very much in evidence. In "El invitado" ("The Guest"), Buho sits cozily by the fire on a cold evening, only to be disturbed by a knock at the door. Finding no one there, he finally realizes it is Invierno (Winter) itself that wants to come in. But when Buho invites it in, his house is quickly filled with wind and snow. In "Te de l grimas" ("Tea from Tears"), Buho thinks of the saddest things he can, making himself cry until his teapot is full enough of tears to brew his tea. The result is a little salty, but suits him very well. The illustrations are charming and homely, a little Sendakian, full of muted grays, tans, and oranges. Students will likely be cheered and amused by Buho's apparent foolishness, and soothed by his good temper and kindness. The translation is smooth and lively. Coop Renner, Paul C.
