Emily Lim is from Singapore. The inspiration for her award-winning debut picture book is drawn from her personal experiences. Emily developed a rare voice disorder (Spasmodic Dysphonia) in 1999, which made it difficult for her to speak. Through her struggles to cope with this setback, she found strength in God, as well as love and support from family and friends. This story gives voice to her belief that she will be able to speak normally again one day.Review:
Not only is this a page-turner, but it is one that parents can use to teach the values of compassion, empathy and friendship. Prince Bear is handsome and destined to be the favourite teddy of a child but life didn't turn out rosy for him. And what hope is there for ugly Pauper Bear? The author's story is inspired by her experience of living with a rare voice disorder that has made speaking difficult - a difficult journey which led to this book, which won her the First Time Writers and Illustrators Publishing Initiative Award given by the Media Development Authority. --Young Parents Jan 2008
Editor's rave! A lonely, poorly-made toy bear finally finds an owner, and helps a chewed-up bear escape a sorry fate. Lovely story about hope and friendship. Gorgeous illustrations by Neal Sharp. --Simply Her Jan 2008
Charming illustrations and a very sweet tale - what more can anyone ask for? Emily Lim won a First-Time Writer award last year for her tale of two bears. One nicknamed Pauper Bear, vocally challenged like the author, is a bit tatty with mismatched eyes whilst his neighbour Prince Bear is regally handsome. But love is not about good looks and when Prince Bear is bought by a spoilt little Missy and Pauper Bear goes to a humble little boy, they learn how unexpected life can be. --Lifestyle Feb 2008
