Synopsis

Jacques Boullaire (1893-1976) is a famous French artist who did engravings. He was drawn to the Pacific Islands as a result of his marriage to Anne Hervé, the daughter of a French resident in the Tuamotu Islands, raised in the rough and austere solitude of a Polynesian atoll where she, too, delighted in drawing and painting. His engravings began with sketches. This book is a short biography of Boullaire and a large collection of his sketches. Black cloth boards, tipped in illustrated, paper title block surmounted by a silver frame to cover and tipped in, paper title block to spine. Presentation by Aiu Deschamps-Boullaire. Translated from the French by Elizabeth Bonner and Victor Wortman. Stunning, evocative art on the subject of Tahiti and its people. Printed on high quality paper. No jacket - probably as issued. Color pastedown on cover. b/w sketches & watercolours.
