9789814346214: Teardrop Story Woman

The Teardrop Story woman is Mei Kwei, born in Malaya in 1934 and doubly cursed - not only is she female, but she also has a tiny teardrop mole in the corner of one eye: a sign of bad luck that presages disaster. Fate proves kinder to Mei Kwei who inherits her grandmother's extraordinary good looks and gift for storytelling. As she grows up, Mei Kwei must cope with the attention of the men who begin to encircle her, attracted by the intensity of her beauty and by her spirit. She runs from these men to a man who cannot love her back - the charismatic Father Martin, a French Catholic missionary - and the demands of the flesh and the spirit come into fearful collision. Set in Malaya in turbulent 1950s, this is an irresistible story of passion and obligation where no one is safe, least of all those watched by jealous men or exacting gods.

About the Author:

Catherine Lim grew up in Malaysia but lives and works in Singapore where she lectured in Applied Linguistics before turning to writing full time. She has published seven collections of short stories (two of which have been used as GCSE texts by Cambridge University), three novels, a book of poems and hundreds of articles.

From Publishers Weekly:

Set in the 1950s, this atmospheric and moving love story by Singaporean author Lim (The Bondmaid) chronicles a Chinese girl's coming-of-age during the British occupation of Malaya. Mei Kwei, the Teardrop Story woman, was born "doubly cursed": not only is she a girl, but she has a teardrop-shaped mole beside her eyeAa harbinger of suffering, according to Chinese folklore. Although her father scorns her and unsuccessfully attempts to have her adopted by another family, the resourceful Mei Kwei survives by charming those around her, from her loutish Big Older BrotherAwhose affection for her has sexual overtonesAto the three men whose attentions later change her life. The first, a rich man known as Old Yoong, courts her by paying off her father's opium debts and rescuing her family from poverty; predictably, Mei Kwei quickly rebels against his possessiveness and finally spurns him for Austin Tong, a wealthy young entrepreneur. It isn't until Mei Kwei meets the unconventional French priest Fran?ois Martin, however, that she finally falls in love. Lim richly recreates Malayan life during this turbulent period, and she is a vivid chronicler of the intersection of Eastern and Western mores. The wealth of detail sometimes obscures the characters themselves, but once the narrative acquires momentum, the forbidden passion between Mei Kwei and Father Martin attains a compelling intensity. (Nov.) FYI: The Bondmaid is forthcoming in paper from Warner Books.
