Tulang-Tulang Berserakan (1966) is the only novel written by the late Malaysian National Laureate Usman Awang and is now translated into English by Dr. Hasnah Ibrahim and edited by Furziah Affendi. Part of it is a life biography of Usman and the other part comes from his early life experiences as a Jungle Squad police during the Japanese Occupation of Malaya. The dramatic storyline that unfolds in this novel takes place during the Emergency period in Malaya after World War II.
The pain and hardships endured by the people, suppressed by the sufferings of war and at the same time faced with the conflicts between The Colonial British Empire and Malayan Communists fighting for control over Malaya.
The result of this long hard journey through this novel at last is the start of Usman's literary career.

Malaysian National Laureate Dato' Dr. Usman Awang or also known as by his many pen names such as Tongkat Warrant, Adi Jaya, Amir, Atma Jiwa, Manis, Pengarang Muda, Ros Murni, Setia Budi,Zaini, U.A. was born on July 12th 1929, in Kampung Tanjung Lembu, Kuala Sedili, Kota Tinggi, Johor. His early education was in Sekolah Melayu Kuala Sedili (1936), Mersing (1937) and Bandar Maharani (1940) until he passed Standard VI. During the Japanese Occupation in Malaya, he was a farmer in Segamat and later on came to be a Japanese forced labourer in Singapore for about six months.
Due to his family's situation during that period and the shortcomings of a country still colonized, he achieved education informally through his life experiences. This probability is a result of his maturity and wisdom to expand with the progression of nature suited with the demands of his time from an office boy, he trained as a 'Botai' (Japanese Police), was in service as a policeman in Malacca (1946 1950), proofreader, journalist, and became a member of the editorial board of the newspaper 'Melayu Raya'. After that, in the 'Utusan Melayu' newspaper, he was one of the editorial journalists under 'Utusan Kanak-kanak', 'Utusan Zaman' and 'Mastika' (1951 - 1961). He then moved and became semi-retired, working at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka during the 80s.
As a concerned, knowledgeable and responsible person, undoubtedly his contributions to this institution and literature are not small. Various awards and tributes were bestowed upon him such as 'Pejuang Sastera' (1976), SEA Write Award (1982) and an Honarary Doctorate in Literature from The University of Malaya, proving that his commitment and integrity to the world of Malay Literature is most significant.
He died peacefully on the 29th of November 2001 at the age of 72 after a long and tiring battle against heart disease.
