Come, Meet the Church: Life in a Typical North American Congregation

9789958354670: Come, Meet the Church: Life in a Typical North American Congregation

Bud Dixen is an ordained pastor who has served the Church in parishes in urban Chicago, in suburban Minneapolis, and in rural Pella, Grinnell, and Charles City, Iowa. In each of those locations Dixen has observed the joys, challenges, and idiosyncrasies of the people who make up the Church. This book recalls some of those folk in stories that are often humorous, occasionally critical, and always respectful. It is obvious that the flawed, authentic people of God have captured Dixen's heart and driven his life's work as a pastor, preacher of the Gospel, and tender of souls. Although Dixen is well known as a leader in the struggle for civil rights and justice throughout his career, the stories in this book are of a less dramatic sort-the day-to-day encounters of a pastor who loves the people making up his congregation and his community, and who in turn is embraced and welcomed into the turmoils and routine of their everyday lives. You will recognize many of the people whose stories are recorded in Come, Meet the Church. They are the folk who live next to you, sit in the same pew each Sunday, and give their hearts and their hands to the work of God's church. Dixen writes: "This is not my story. It's a whimsical, awestruck look at some people I have known in what may be typical North American congregations. These are people I've met over the past decades, people who were faithful. . . . Not one of them is famous as the world counts fame, but they have all added to my life. . . . Come with me and meet them. They are the Church."
