Synopsis

Establishing the railway in 1870 meant a new era for Estonia. Many old railway station buildings still stand, representing a chapter in the history of Estonian industrial architecture. The most remarkable examples are the Haapsalu historicist passenger terminal and the national-romantic Tallinn-Järve station, designed by architect Karl Burman. Between 1920 and 1930 various talented architects worked at the Railway Board Construction Office, such as Leon Johanson, Hendrik Otloot, and briefly Viktor Tretjakevitch, whose standard design station buildings are fine examples of traditional and functionalist tendencies in Estonian architecture. This book offers a wide selection of photos of railway stations and stops, some which are still functioning, and some which have been destroyed or are no longer in use. 8x9.5", 191 pp., b&w photographs, map on endpapers, text in Estonian, German and English.
