Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Book Club Edition. The story begins in the fifth year of the reign of the emperor Kuang Hsu, 1892, in the courtyards of the House of Chang in Soochow, as the slave girl of the child Spring Moon achieves a terrible revenge against the clan. It ends in the early 1970's when, though the moon gates and fan gates of the courts are gone, five generations of clansmen gather at the site of the family graves to perform the ceremonies that for thousands of years have linked China's past with her present and both with the futures. During the intervening years, each according to his destiny, the clansmen play their parts: Spring Moon and her Eldest Uncle, the scholar-poet Bold Talent, Patriarch of the House of Chang; her Young Uncle, the soldier Noble Talent; her husband, Glad Promise, who is a stranger on their wedding night; her daughter Lustrous Jade; August Winds, the orphan son of poor relations; the servant Fatso- and many others. At the center is Spring Moon. She lives with us from the first page, and it is through her that China's eternal drama and values are revealed. Seller Inventory # 000888
